On 'The Workout Called Life' and rediscovering Ferris Bueller

We spent two minutes with John to learn more about his background, his creative inspirations and recent work he's admired.

John, tell us...

Where you grew up, and where you live now.

Born and raised in San Francisco. Currently living between Bozeman and Los Angeles.

How you first realized you were creative.

I spent hours at my grandparents' house building forts on the beach with driftwood. My parents thought I would be an architect.

A person you idolized creatively early on.

My mother. She was an interior designer as well as a painter and product designer. She gave me my sense of spacing, colors, patterns and unapologetic attention to detail.

A book, movie, TV show or podcast you recently found inspiring.

Greg Hoffman's Emotion by Design.

Your favorite fictional character.

Tough to name just one but recently rediscovered Ferris Bueller.

One of your favorite creative projects you've ever worked on.

"Straight Outta," while leading digital at Beats by Dre.

A recent project you're proud of.

"The Workout Called Life," for our Theragun launch and rebrand at Therabody.

Someone else's work that inspired you years ago.

Steve Jobs introducing "Think Different."

Someone else's work you admired lately.

I love the work Paulie Dery has been doing at Yeti, especially around sustainability.

Your main strength as a creative person.

Simplification and consistency.

Your biggest weakness.

Control. I want to see everything before it goes out. I'm endless tweaking. It can drive my team crazy.

What you'd be doing if you weren't in advertising.

Part-time professor and part-time ski patrol.
