"You don't want to come out of this tough time and find that all your favorite small businesses are closed," says Mindy Kaling in a new campaign from food-delivery service Postmates.
In the :60 below, developed with Mother L.A., Kaling talks up her favorite pizza place, ritzy Mozza2Go in Los Angeles. "I hope I see you out there—I mean, I hope I don't see you out there. I hope you stay at home," she says.
The former star of The Office and The Mindy Project recorded her bit on a phone at home, as did other celebrities, including Los Angeles Dodgers slugger and reigning National League MVP Cody Bellinger, actor/TV host Mario Lopez and Shark Tank investor Daymond John.
They all name-drop their favorite eateries…
…and the spot ultimately reminds viewers, "Your local restaurants need their locals. #OrderLocal." The work doesn't actually mention Postmates, except for the bike courier icon at the end, focusing instead on the restaurants themselves.
By some estimates, more than 50 percent of eateries could close permanently owing to the pandemic. By encouraging folks to order in, the campaign hopes to help establishments stay afloat during the crisis.
Postmates has also launched a relief program encouraging merchants unfamiliar to join the platform, and waived delivery fees in markets such as San Francisco and Detroit. Since the coronavirus scourge began, the number of merchants signing up for Postmates has increased by a factor of 10, the company says.
