From New Mutants to Birds of Prey, See This Week's Trailers and Posters

Plus, a return to The Quiet Place

What an exciting week it was in Hollywood to kick off the new year. We've got genres coming out of the woodwork as we've never seen before. There's adventure and mystery, not to mention the mounting pressure of the most elite cheer squad in the world. This week was so wild, Hollywood managed to produce a candidate all parties could agree on: Disney+ 2020.

But be warned. There's a lot of scares this week, too. Be prepared to be uncomfortable, whether it's the terrifying witch of the Grimm's worst nightmare or the creatures that lurk around the quiet place. There are frightening moments ahead.

It's not all scares; there's also some serious acting chops. I'm talking Adam Sandler at his finest. Margot Robbie returns as beloved bad girl Harley Quinn. There's also Al Pacino. Need I say more?

Welcome to 2020. Here are some of the notable trailers and posters released this week.

New Mutants

20th Century Fox & Disney Studios
Trailer Agency: Wild Card Creative Group
Poster Agency: Ignition

I'm stunned by the New Mutants trailer. I didn't know much about the plot going in and assumed I was walking into an X-Men update, but this is so much more. It's a new hybrid—superhero horror. The trailer is scary—it starts out like an origin story and then morphs into horror. It was a welcome surprise. The song choice gave me chills. You couldn't have been more on-point. What an epic way to kick off the new year. The key art contains a strong creep factor as well. See New Mutants on April 13.

Locke & Key

Netflix
Trailer Agency: Trailer Park
Poster Agency: Size Matters

The trailer for Locke & Key, which is based on the graphic novels, will take you on a grand adventure. The cinematography is remarkable. Netflix is making cinematic television a new standard. I appreciate the score as well; it provides a fantastical feel. My favorite part—I adore a clever title treatment. Its usage in the key art is splendid, too. Discover what's under Locke & Key on Feb. 7.

Diary of a Future President

Disney+
Trailer Agency: Create Advertising
Poster Agency: LA

The trailer for Diary of a Future President looks heartwarming and inspiring for folks of all ages. This new addition to the Disney+ lineup seems witty and relatable, as is the key art. Dive into the Diary of a Future President on Jan. 17.

Gretel & Hansel

Orion Pictures
Trailer Agency: Buddha Jones

This fairy tale had me cringing from start to finish. The new trailer for Gretel & Hansel is spine-tingling, to say the least. The editing is quick but draws out tension. The score and sound design irk with discomfort. Like the fairy tale itself, this trailer is not one you'll soon forget. Follow the bread crumbs to theaters on Jan. 31.

Hunters

Amazon Prime Video
Trailer Agency: AV Squad
Poster Agency: Stockholm Design

The trailer for Hunters introduces a new breed of vigilantes, and Al Pacino happens to be the ring leader. That's right, the master of performance has a new series on Prime Video with Jordan Peele serving as executive producer. The trailer is filled with action, heart, a masterful Pacino breakdown, and some badass Nazi killers. Check out the character poster as well. Hunting season begins Feb. 2.

Uncut Gems

A24
Trailer Agency: GrandSon
Now Playing

The new trailer for Uncut Gems highlights the remarkable grit of the film. The use of Billy Joel's "The Stranger" is spectacular, from the light whistle that eases you into the story, then the heavy-hitting beats that come at you as the story cuts loose. Uncut Gems is now playing in theaters.

A Quiet Place: Part II

Paramount Pictures
Trailer Agency: Create Advertising
Poster Agency: BLT Communications

The trailer for A Quiet Place: Part II is brilliantly edited, with long, terrifying sequences that build up tension without giving away too much. It is the perfect tease. It lets you know the story is fresh while still promising the horror of the original. The key art is haunting. It's easy to get lost in the eeriness ahead. Return to A Quiet Place on March 20.

Cheer

Netflix
Trailer Agency: Netflix Creative Studio

Anyone who says cheerleading isn't a sport ought to watch the trailer for Netflix's new docuseries. The trailer is intense, moving, and will leave you in absolute awe of this sport. Cheer is now streaming on Netflix.

Birds of Prey

Warner Bros.
Trailer Agency: BOND
Poster Agency: BOND

Gotham's favorite bad girl is back, and she brought a posse with her. The new trailer for Birds of Prey is a pure delight. It's action-packed, yet muses a classic Hollywood feel. It will keep a smile on your face from start to finish, just as Harley Quinn would want. It's exuberant, like the character herself. The poster has gone wild with girl power. Flock to theatres for Birds of Prey on Feb. 7.
